Nello stesso periodo, Nokia ha iniziato a lavorare su nuove fotocamere con diversi fattori di forma e con uno zoom ottico. Si dovevano però accettare dei compromessi. Per realizzare una fotocamera con zoom ottico , bisognava ridurre la dimensione del sensore e la risoluzione, ma ciò avrebbe comportato un peggioramento della qualità delle immagini e dei video. Prendendo ispirazione dal modo in cui un satellite scatta immagini ad alta risoluzione, gli ingegneri Nokia hanno progettato un sensore che genera immagini a risoluzione più bassa rispetto a quella di ingresso. Utilizzando un algoritmo di upscaling/interpolazione, si ottiene un risultato simile a uno zoom ottico, ma con prestazioni maggiori.

Dopo diversi mesi di lavoro insieme a Carl Zeiss , durante i quali sono stati testate diverse soluzioni ottiche, materiali e tecnologie di fabbricazione, Nokia ha realizzato un prototipo del Nokia 808 PureView con una fotocamera da 41 Megapixel e un sensore ottico con rapporto di aspetto 13:9. Come si può vedere chiaramente dagli scatti pubblicati, la qualità delle immagini ottenute è paragonabile a quella di una reflex digitale Canon .
