, And here’s a recommended article to read if you’re interested by the topic), has been here since the introduction of a clock in the mobile phone, followed by the Address Book, Calculator… Ever since, a lot of features have been added, either in terms of hardware or software, to make these little pieces of technology even more powerful and help them replace numerous other standalone utilities or gadgets. But what I call Design Convergence is when a gadget is not only capable of replacing several others, but it is also designed in a way to prove it. After all, the best way to make a feature discoverable is to make it visible.

Over years of observing how people interact with mobile phones, I came to the realization that features that have a visible hardware component (like a camera) are most likely to be discovered and used by everyday phone owners, whereas features that are only software-based (music player, document viewer/editor…) or hidden in the hardware (accelerometer) take a lot more time to be discovered and adopted. Usually it takes a device built with “design convergence” in mind, to show through advertisements that a particular gadget “can also be used as this”.

Throughout the Symbian-S60 history, two devices before the 3250 XpressMusic introduced the concept of Design Convergence. The first one was the N-Gage Classic which proved that a phone can also be a powerful gaming device, the second was the N90 which brought the camcorder concept into the equation. But with these two, Design Convergence was limited to only one additional component to the mobile phone, and they both remained very niche in their target audience. That’s why I look back at the 3250 XpressMusic as one of my favorite devices: it brought two additional design components to the phone, making everyone aware that it is a phone + camera + music player. It definitely wasn’t a high-end handset, but through its affordable mass market price and awkward form-factor, it showed people the capabilities of mobile devices and that a lot is yet to come from these pocketable gadgets. That’s why I look back at it today with a lot of respect, and a small sadness that it barely got the recognition it deserved. I guess it will always remain the unsung hero of Design Convergence, at least in my modest opinion.
